What oil should I use for my vehicle?

There are many choices when it comes to picking the best oil for your car’s engine. The first thing you need to know, is the make and model of your vehicle. Newer engines with high performance are being developed to improve efficiency and that means new oil formulations have been developed to accompany and keep up with those developments.

But along with that it’s important to take into consideration what environment you drive in most regularly. Temperature, as well as paved or unpaved roads, place different levels of strain on your engine. So, keep your surrounding conditions in mind before choosing a brand of oil.

Then there’s the type of oil you use, whether mineral or synthetic based that each have their own have pros and cons. The base oil accounts for approximately 80% to 90% of your engine’s oil, so make sure you understand and weigh the benefits of what type of oil you use for your vehicle.

Why do I need an oil filter change?

Contaminants pose a threat to the health of your engine. Oil filters, are charged with sifting out any physical contaminants This is why you need to replace your oil filter, making sure your motor lasts as long as possible. If you on a regular basis or often find yourself on dirt roads, you may want to change your lubricants more often than required in your vehicle’s manual, which may, in fact, come with a heavy-duty replacement schedule.

A filter is only effective if it’s able to strain and store more grime. Once full, it no longer provides any protection from unwanted contamination. If left on too long, it’s also possible for certain designs to have their filter media disintegrate internally and then send all that’s been filtered out back into the motor. This can include dirt, dust or sludge that’s been loosened by the detergents in the lubricant. By removing and storing these particles, the filter prevents them from circulating through, reducing friction and prevents wear that can potentially damage your engine.

Driving in the Rains - an Autoworld Guide

The first rains make the roads extra slippery as the mud and oil on dry roads can combine with the water to form a slippery layer. You’re then likely to experience a loss of control. So be extra careful.

In addition check your tyres:

1. Tyres should have plenty of tread depth to evacuate standing water from between the road surface and your tyre. If your current tyres are worn down to anywhere near 2.5mm, it’s time to think about replacing your tyres.

2. Tyre pressures that are too low or too high can lead to reduced traction, premature tread wear, or tyre damage. Check your tyre pressure regularly (at least once a month) to make sure they’re properly inflated

Other safety tips

1. Slowing down on wet roads is crucial. Wet roads give you less grip, increase your braking distance and reduce your ability to properly steer around obstacles.

2. Keep a further distance from the car in front of you since braking distances are longer on wet roads. Staying back also keeps you away from the tyre spray of the vehicle in front, giving you better visibility.

3. Jerky or sudden change in steering direction can lead to loss of control, especially on rain-slicked roads so drive with smoother steering.

4. Make sure your vehicle can be seen in wet conditions. Turn on your lights and make sure that all of them are in working order.
