International Women's Day March Past 2020 by Annie Zulu
Autoworld ladies (and gents) took part in the International Women’s Day march past in Lusaka on March 8th 2020. The theme this year was “I am Generation Equality; Realising Women’s Rights” and the salute was taken by President Edgar Lungu.
It was a very hot day! We started off at 07:00hrs from the ZESCO flyover bridge, and only reached the show grounds at 13:00hrs.
The occasion was full of colour and glamour. And we were not left out - the outfits worn by the Autoworld participants were splendid. The smiling faces in the pictures say thank you to Autoworld Management for supporting the company’s participation at this event.

Car Parts And Accessories Training at Autoworld
Autoworld always works on keeping its team up to date in terms of the products and services it offers its customers. In November 2019 Autoworld employees in Lusaka were treated to two product training sessions, covering car lighting systems and car care products.
1. Hella Products Training
On 20th November 2019 a trainer from South Africa instructed the Sales and Warehouse staff on the Hella range of vehicle lighting products. Hella offers innovative technologies – from sensors to headlamps. Autoworld is pleased to distribute these products. Visit any of our branches countrywide to view and purchase them.

On 26th and 27th November we had training on Holts products.

The 2019 Fuchs Elephant Charge Challenge: We did it! by Autoworld Team Captain David Findlay
Introduction
The setting for the 2019 Fuchs Elephant charge was a stunning mountainous area two hour’s drive to the south east of Lusaka. There is considerable deforestation in the area, which served as a reminder of the true reason why we attend this event each year; to raise money for conservation through education. In fact the organizers of the Elephant charge event chose this site to show all the competitors and spectators the reality of how the Zambian bush is being affected by the rampant charcoal trade.
Although I was excited to be at the Elephant charge again, seeing this sad reality made me realize how vulnerable our forests and wildlife are. It gives me all the more reason to be involved in conservation. Education is so important and the more people are taught to conserve, the better chance we have in saving our beautiful natural resources.
Lots of time and sacrifice go into fund raising by all the teams, and this is very rewarding. People matter and educating people has a very positive impact, not only their own lives, but also on their communities and their environment.
Whenever I have been approached about the Elephant charge, many people tend to be more interested in all the fun that goes on during the race. But I’d like us all to think for a moment about the conservation goal of the event and how this is being achieved.
How are the Elephant charge funds spent each year?
I believe good stewardship gives sponsors the assurance and confidence to continue being supportive of this great cause.
Over the last 12 years the Elephant charge has raised over USD1,000,000 which has all been spent on conservation. This is a great success thanks to the organizing committee and all the participants of the race over the years.
Thanks to all of the Autoworld Sponsors, the “A” Team has been able to raise a total of USD174,786 over 10 years making us one of the top teams for raising funds for conservation in Zambia!

Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust teaches Zambian children the value of wildlife and their environment so they may be conserved for present and future generations.
Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust has used funds provided by the Elephant Charge to support the Chipembele Conservation Education Center, outreach programs, the Chipembele Rangers Scheme and Chipembele Conservation Scholarships.

3. Children in the Wilderness
Children in the Wilderness is an environmental and life skills educational programme that focuses on the next generation of rural decision makers. It is one of the few programmes aimed at bridging the divide that exists between communities and wildlife.
It has used funds provided by the Elephant Charge to support the annual Children in the Wilderness camps where children from local communities spend a week staying in a safari lodge and participate in game drives, nature walks and wildlife activities, attend interactive workshops on conservation, environmental management, the geography and geology of the area, culture, HIV/AIDS, nutrition classes and learn the importance of wilderness areas to their communities and their country. Children learn the life skills and values necessary to one day become great leaders and great conservationists.

4. Conservation South Luangwa
Conservation South Luangwais a non-profit. community based organization, committed to the conservation of the local wildlife and natural resources of the South Luangwa National Park and surrounding GMAs.
Conservation South Luangwa has used funds provided by the Elephant Charge to support their annual Fun Run Day which promotes conservation in the communities surrounding the South Luangwa National Park and has over 3,000 people attend each year. Funds are also used to support snare removal and anti-poaching patrols.

The rules of the Elephant charge game
For many years I have explained to all our sponsors the rules and the main focus of the race. A team that can make a route on a course of nine to ten checkpoints in the shortest possible over all distance wins the Castle / Fleming trophy.
The main purpose of the race is to raise funds for conservation. The team that achieves the highest sponsorship wins the most prestigious prize of the event, the Sausage tree trophy.
There is also another award which is related to net distance - the Country Choice Trophy. This is for the shortest net distance (= distance covered less 50cm per 1 USD of sponsorship raised).
The race is full of challenges and of course it would not be complete without the Mark Terken trophy for the team that has the shortest distance over the Gauntlet, the most technical stage of the race.
Autoworld, in conjunction with TJM Australia, sponsor a floating trophy called the AUTOWORLD/ TJM treasure hunt trophy. At each checkpoint a team gets one number of a GPS coordinate. After the team completes all the checkpoints, they will have compiled a complete GPS coordinate leading to a metal peg hidden in the bush around the course. With this peg the team wins a 9500LB TJM winch. In the last few years most teams that have won this winch have donated it back to the Elephant charge and it is auctioned at the prize-giving event.

Team Autoworld - Results for 2019
It’s been a long time since the Autoworld team made the finish line. But this year we managed to complete the race in the new car! This made all the hard work and effort so rewarding. The whole team were impressed with the performance of the car. These are the prizes we won:
Castle / Fleming Trophy – Overall distance
Not only did we get to the finish line but we came second in overall distance with a total of 21.27km. The Mud Hogs team came first with an overall distance of 18.27km. In third place was the Camel with 22.20km.
Country Choice - Shortest Net distance
Concerning the Shortest Net distance Award, Team Autoworld came first with a total of -99.3km. In second place was the Chicken Run with a net distance of -63.07km, and in third place was the Camel with a net distance of -49.90km.
Sausage tree Trophy Highest Sponsorship raised
With the overwhelming support of our sponsors, Team Autoworld was very successful to have raised the most funds and took first place, with a total amount of $18,347.00! In second place was the Chicken Run with $13,07.00, and in third place was Lilayi BSI Steel with $11,000.00.
This is really what the Elephant charge is about! A total of $139,193.00 was raised by the 28 teams that participated. Well done to all the teams! Great effort!

What’s the plan for 2020?
My goals for 2020 will be to have more of our suppliers come on board the Autoworld team. If this plan comes to pass I can only predict higher funds raised for 2020!
My second goal would be to see the team at the finish line again. What a feeling!

Firstly, I must say a great big thank you to all the sponsors for supporting the Autoworld team. I feel honored to be part of this, having so much support. The entire team is so proud of the new car! It’s reliable and has capabilities to be a winning car soon!
My goal in my last report was to see the team reach the finish line which we did. I also wanted to have the team hit the Jackpot and win the Sausage Tree Trophy which we did. This event was enjoyable and hit our goals is the cherry on the cake!

Wynn's In-House Promotion
Autoworld has just announced the winners of a recent in-house competition. Salespeople were encouraged to sell as many Wynns products as possible over the period 1st July - 30th Sept 2019, with the highest sellers receiving prizes! Last week Annabel Zulu, Autoworld’s HR Manager, was delighted to announce the three winners.
In third place, having sold 273 Wynn’s products, was King Mweene, of Impala Service Station in Lusaka. His prize was K1,500 cash. In second place was Nelson Phiri of Autoworld Ndola. His prize was K2,000. And overall winner, with total sales of 324 Wynn’s products, was Dicto Mulunda, from Autoworld Downtown in Lusaka. He received a 32” Blaupunkt LED TV!
Autoworld management congratulates the three winners, and thanks all the other salesmen that participated, appreciating all the hard work everyone put in.
Shield in-house training
Shield South Africa offers a wide range of accessories for both internal and external use - from cleaning products to treatment of engines. On 8th October 2019 a team from Shield came to Autoworld’s Head Office in Lusaka to give some tips and training to about 27 salesmen and workshop staff, including purchasing personnel.
The training covered how different products are used. And the Shield team explained why vehicle owners should not use washing detergents for washing their cars but Shield car shampoos instead. Other detergents tend to remove the top protective layer of paint and that’s why we see cars with oxidation (colour fading).
Another important point related to the use of microfiber cloths as opposed to mutton cloth. Microfiber cloths should be used on and in the car, whereas mutton cloth should only be used for the engine, as mutton cloth can scratch the car paint. This is a vey cardinal point for all motorists to take note.
A few new products were also introduced, including the headlight restoration kit.
But the main focus of the training was sales, and what to recommend to a customer by suggestive selling. Tips were given on how to capture impulse buyers by displaying products where they will be noticed - on the counter tops or just behind the salesmen, in line of sight of the customer.
After the event - Elephant Charge 2019
The 2019 Elephant Charge happened last weekend. And we’re proud to announce that our team won the shortest net distance trophy, raising $18,347 and completed the course in 21.27km! Congratulations also go to Conservation Lower Zambezi Mudhogs, winners of the shortest competition distance trophy at 18.27km, the many other trophy winners, and everyone else who took part.
This year’s Elephant Charge raised a total of £139,260 for conservation projects in Zambia. The amount brought the total over the years to over $1,000,000 !

All about the Elephant charge 4x4 challenge

The Elephant charge is an off road rally challenge filled with adrenaline and adventure. Each team of up to 6 members drive in mountainous terrain in a 4x4 trying to get the shortest possible distance around the course of 10 checkpoints. That’s it!
It’s not so much speed that wins, but slow and very technical driving. The race is an 8 hour event and in that time the winning team should complete a total distance of 25-30 km. This is easier said than done as there are hardly any roads on the course and teams solely rely on GPS navigation. However the Elephant charge is not only about being thrown about in a 4x4 for eight hours in order to stand a chance of winning a trophy. Its true purpose is one of greater importance ...
Raising money for conservation
That’s the key! The teams have a mammoth task ahead of them each year to approach companies and individuals to seek sponsorship. This can be done in many different ways. However the Autoworld team has partnered with all our local and international suppliers around the world. When they offer special discounts on purchases we buy, we pass these onto the Elephant charge each year. This has been a highly successful method, raising a total of USD156,443 from 2010 to date. And still counting!
The sponsorship funds raised each year are used for conservation, specifically for education and anti-poaching initiatives. There are many conservation organisations from all over Zambia supported by the Elephant charge. These are listed here https://www.elephantcharge.org/beneficiaries
Trophies won
Besides raising money for conservation, Team Autoworld has won three trophies for the shortest net distance, one trophy for the overall race and tsetse line, and four trophies for the gauntlet (a section of the course designated as ‘extreme terrain’).
Our Elephant charge team finds it a great pleasure and privilege to represent not only Autoworld but also the many suppliers that support this cause!
The Autoworld Rally car - ups and downs
In 2010 the Autoworld team started the race in a Fiat Jeep which broke down after only a few kilometres. We completed the race in a standard Land Cruiser vehicle - with poor results.
In 2011 we built up a Hilux Surf, thanks to generous support from our sponsors. This vehicle, fully modified, eventually won the Elephant charge in 2014! We raced the Hilux Surf until 2017, when we received overwhelming support to build a new vehicle.
2018 Car and Sponsors
Throughout the year 2018 there was a lot of panic to get the new car working and ready to race in September. This cost me a broken hand while working with the engineers day and night to finish the vehicle. I finally completed the car with a team of mechanics/electricians and fabricators two nights before the race, leaving hardly any time for thorough testing.

As mentioned above, we didn’t have enough time to complete the car and fully test it before the race. And this cost us the race! Unfortunately, an hour before the race began, on our way to a checkpoint, we hit into a tree stump which severely damaged the steering rod. We managed to dismantle the part during the race and temporarily fix it. But not having the under vehicle protection fitted was the problem. It wasn’t long before the steering rod was bent with rocks. This in turn caused strain against the driveshafts, and one of them eventually snapped completely. This left us with a vehicle with no 4WD when we needed it most. We put our heads together as a team and decided to at least complete the Gauntlet section and ensure we won one prize. We all sadly knew that we would not be completing the full race given the condition of the car at that point.
The Autoworld / TJM Treasure Hunt Trophy
Autoworld and TJM Australia each year sponsor the Elephant charge Treasure Hunt Trophy. There is a great prize to be won with this trophy - a 9500lb TJM winch! In order to win this prize a team must complete all the checkpoints of the course. At each checkpoint the team will receive a number which is part of the full coordinates leading to a peg hidden in the bush somewhere around the course.
The first team to get the full set of coordinates and find the peg wins the prize. The Hot Clutch team won the trophy last year, auctioning their newly acquired winch at the event. (All proceeds from the auction were given to one of the conservation beneficiaries.)

I am so grateful for all the support, sponsoring the team so well that we were able to reach a great milestone last year with a new vehicle. Over and above that we were still able to raise a significant amount of money to come in at third place for money raised. Every bit counts and we all know the threat that wildlife and natural reserves face today. I am always thankful to be able to play my role in raising money for this great cause.
2019 Focus
For 2019 my focus is to fully complete the vehicle in good time and ensure all the hurdles and teething problems are attended to beforehand. This will enable us to finally finish the race and hopefully get some better results. Most importantly as a team we want to strive for the first place for money raised - the most important prize of them all. With the continued support of our sponsors, I hope to achieve this goal. If we complete the shortest distance as well then that will be the cherry on the cake!
