50 YEARS OF IMPALA:
Prior to opening Impala Service Station, I was running the famous Independence Bar in Emmasdale area on the Great North Road, Lusaka, just before the Independence Stadium. This bar was opened by my dear late father Christopher Harry Findlay shortly after Zambia gained independence in 1964. Being situated on the way to the Stadium my father could not resist naming the bar “Independence Bar. “
When I took dealership of Impala Service Station in 1972, I decided to open on the 24th October which is Independence Day. The idea of getting into the fuel business was a chance encounter. I was having a conversation with the then Sales Director of Caltex, Hugh Atkinson on the subject of profit margins on beer and fuel. I was convinced that volumes of fuel sales would exceed volumes of beer consumed. I decided to go for a dealership with Caltex.
I was inspired & encouraged by my dear late Mother, Marjory Findlay to do this; even loaning me one thousand Kwacha to open a bank account with Barclays Bank. Within a month my bank account was running on an overdraft of four thousand kwacha, which thanks to the good name & trust Barclays Bank had for my parents, I was allowed to continue with an overdraft. Impala Service Station dealership was initially with Caltex Oil Zambia until Caltex sold out to Chevron, however still operating under the Caltex brand. Chevron eventually sold out to Engen and now Vivo Energy has taken over.
I set up Impala Service Station to be a one stop shop. Motorists would drive in to fuel their vehicles knowing that our shop had cigarettes, snacks and essential car accessories, like tyres, batteries, lubricants, spark plugs, light bulbs and in the rainy season wiper blades. I remember a tourist driving into Lusaka and about 100 meters before Impala Service Station had a puncture. He had no spare tyre, so he slept in the car. He was surprised the next morning when we told him that we would have mended his tyre at night because we prided ourselves on the fact that we ran a 24-hour mending service.
Besides fuel and lubricants, the other big business we took on was car and truck tyres. We were one of the first appointed dealers of Dunlop Tyres manufactured in Zambia. Our main customers were the truckers like Petand Transport, Jerlija Transport, Mataringwe Transport, N. P. Transport, A. M. Motors and many private companies with fleets of vehicles who still support us today, Thank you!
50 years is a long journey and it would not have been possible without the assistance and support of family. I would like to like to give special thanks to my late ex wife Elizabeth, my late brothers Edwin, Freddie and Joe, my sisters Dorothy and Osanna who were always there when I needed help and support.
I am grateful to our dedicated accounts & sales team we have at Impala Service Station & Autoworld. I also want to acknowledge that in 1972 the first team I employed were trained by Caltex. The staff today have carried this training on and maintain a standard that has been kept with pride. Late Michael Zulu & Braison Lungu who were the first supervisors worked with us until their retirement. Michael eventually ended up as General Manager
Over the years as we grew Impala Service Station, we organized promotions. The famous ones were the Grand Raffles where a lucky customer would win a car on the draw date.
We now have fully equipped workshops doing not only tyre mending but Wheel balancing, alignment and servicing of vehicles.
All this had been made possible because of the able management of the company by our son Glenn and our nephews David and Pierre Findlay who has been at the helm of the company for the past 15 years.
When we were growing Impala Service Station to what it is today, we imported a container of patches from England, I remember how Cossie my wife worked with our children Glenn, Chris and Charlotte for many weeks sorting the patches into different sizes & repacking them for sale, because when we opened the container every single patch of many sizes was loose.
We opened a snack bar at the rear of the service station that over the years became the baby of my sister-in-law Gail who has grown the reputation of making the best meat pie in the whole of Lusaka and has now expanded into selling them frozen ready for the oven. I am so proud and thankful to Gail.
Last but not least I would like to say thank you to my wife Cossie who supports me in every way.
Over the years Impala Service Station has expanded and is now the Mother of Autoworld.
As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Impala Service Station, I could not be more grateful and proud of the Partnership we share with our customers. Our success would not have been possible without you.
Thank you

INVEST IN QUALITY:
While some people think a tool is just a tool, professionals and artisans alike know that the quality of your hand tools makes a big difference to your work. Poor quality tools can leave you at risk of delays, injuries and imperfections, and investing in decent tools is crucial for anyone who works with them every day.
Durability
When it comes to weighing up the pros and cons of investing in a better-quality tool, many people think they’re saving money by purchasing cheap knock-offs. However, these are all but certain to break – and often at the most frustrating moment. This means that not only do you have to purchase a new replacement, you’ll have to put your project on hold while you go find one.
High-quality tools such as those made by GEDORE are guaranteed to deliver a lifetime of dependable performance, so when you purchase one of our tools, you never have to worry about it breaking or performing under par.
Precision
Another downside of cheaper tools is the lack of precision and reliability. When you’re working on a project, you need to know that all your tools are delivering precise performance, every time – otherwise, you risk your whole project falling apart. GEDORE’s high-quality hand tools always meet and often exceed international standards and tolerances, giving you peace of mind that your tool is doing exactly what you need it to do.
Safety
If a tool breaks or lets you down at a crucial moment, you may risk unnecessary injuries. From tools that slip at the wrong moment, to blades that snap and cause lacerations, low-quality tools present a much higher danger than those of a better calibre.
Ergonomics is also something to consider, as high-quality hand tools are usually designed to be operated comfortably and with as little effort as possible. If you’re working with your hands all day, this is a massive bonus, reducing the risk of aches, pains, fatigue and musculoskeletal injuries.
At GEDORE, we have spent over a century perfecting each of our superior hand tools – and we’re so confident in their long-lasting performance, every GEDORE tool is guaranteed for life.
So, when it comes to choosing the right-hand tools for you, choose GEDORE for the ultimate in quality, precision and lifelong durability.

How oil changes, protects engines
Performing oil changes personally can be a hassle, but it is a necessary task that must be done. Engines are made up of many moving parts, and those parts need to be properly lubricated to avoid damage. Oil in the engine provides this vital function. Over time, that oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dust, dirt and debris from the engine as well as the environment. When that happens, oil can’t properly do its job.
A recent study stated that 22% of vehicles have low or dirty engine oil. Proactively changing a vehicles’ oil and filter will help the engine continue to work at its best and prevent costly repairs to drivers down the road.
Maintains engine lubrication. Imagine all the moving parts, pistons, valves, and other engine parts moving at high rates of speed under the hood of a car. These components create heat and will wear down the engine dramatically without proper oil lubrication. Make sure to refer to the owner’s manual to see what specific weight and grade of oil the vehicle requires and ensure it is kept at the recommended fill volume.
Cools engine components. Moving parts that lack proper lubrication create friction, which in turn creates heat. Maintaining clean and sufficient amounts of oil is the perfect solution to prevent too much friction and over-heating of the engine.
Removes engine wear particles and sludge. Dirt particles are deadly to engines. Over time, dirt can cause corrosion and decrease the life of an engine. Also as time goes on, oil breaks down and turns to “sludge.” The name of the game is to keep the engine clean. Routine oil and filter changes help remove particles and sludge and keep engines at peak condition.
Improves gas mileage. Poor engine lubrication can lead to increased fuel consumption, so make sure there is enough clean oil in the engine. With routine changes and the right kind of oil, fuel mileage can be improved over time by 1-2%. That doesn’t sound like much of an improvement, but for the average car, it leads to savings of almost 4 liters in a year!
Promotes vehicle longevity. Plain and simple, routine maintenance makes your vehicle last longer. Buildup from dirty oil robs a vehicle’s fuel economy and power and makes internal components work harder. An engine that works too hard will end up having more problems down the road as well as a shorter life span.

Mercury Marine introduces new 25 and 30hp four-stroke outboard platform:
The lightest and fastest3-cylinder engines in class:
Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), today introduced its next generation of 25 and 30hp four-stroke outboards – engineered from the ground up to be lighter, faster and easier to operate and maintain. These outboards feature a 3-cylinder, 500cc powerhead with electronic fuel injection. For the first time, electric-start models in 25 and 30hp come standard with Mercury SmartCraft® digital technologies, allowing boaters to connect to the most advanced digital gauges in the industry and to mobile devices through VesselView Mobile™.
“Mercury’s new 25 and 30hp platform brings new capabilities and a better consumer experience to a wide variety of recreational and commercial boats,” said Chris Drees, Mercury Marine president. “In addition to being lighter, faster and quieter, the new engines in this lineup deliver what boaters have asked for with exciting new options like digital technologies and an ergonomically positioned tiller handle.”
Starting at just 132 pounds (60 kilograms), these new three-cylinder engines are 16% lighter than the previous generation and offer class-leading fuel economy. The outboards come in 25 and 30hp FourStroke, 25hp SeaPro™ and 25hp ProKicker™ models.
The updated 25 and 30hp FourStroke and newly introduced 25hp SeaPro models are ideal for 11- to 16-foot v-bottom utility and Jon aluminum boats, inflatable boats, 11- to 13-foot composite and fiberglass micro-skiffs, and shallow v-bottom boats. Additionally, the introduction of a 25hp ProKicker addresses demand for better trolling control for larger boats in the 26- to 39-foot range operating in rough waters and winds commonly encountered in the waters of the Pacific Northwest.
Engines in the platform are available with electric or manual start, tiller or remote controls, manual or power trim, and propeller or Jet propulsion. Tiller models are equipped with an award-winning, nearly 23-inch ergonomically designed tiller handle that is adjustable for right- or left-handed operation and intuitive to use.
Boaters will also enjoy the platform’s ease of maintenance and the option for total vessel integration with SmartCraft technologies.
“Off the water, routine maintenance has never been easier,” said Jim Hergert, senior category manager. “The no-spill oil change system features a drip tray under the oil filter to catch any drips, and water can be quickly drained from the fuel filter without tools.”
“SmartCraft gauges provide vital engine data at a push of a button and anglers can dial in their trolling speed in 10 rpm increments with the Troll Control function,” said Hergert.

6 Reasons Why Driving With Worn‐Out Tyres Is a Bad Idea:
Tyres keep the car on the ground. The importance of good tyre should never be discounted. Even with top‐notch safety features in place motor accidents can occur if not for a good set of wheels. There is no shortcut around this. Get your tyres changed!
1. Bald tyres can overheat
Tyres that are worn down too much are called bald tyres. Bald tyres have a very little tread left on its circumference. As a result, the rubber of the bald tyre is constantly in contact with the asphalt. This causes relatively more heat build‐up compared to a tyre with good groove depth. A new tyre would have grooves to let the air course through. This cools the tyre. Since a worn‐down tyre does not have treads heat would build up and eventually the tyre can blow out.
2. More likely to puncture
The tread of half worn out or bald tyre would be eroded. Because of this, there is only a little rubber left to act as a buffer between the tyre and the roadway. Running over a
bit of glass or any sharp‐edged debris is going to leave you with a flat tyre. Unexpected burst tyre in the middle of driving can potentially cause in a single‐vehicle collision.
3. There is the risk of hydroplaning
Tread patterns or grooves are designed to prevent hydroplaning. Hydroplaning or aquaplaning is when there is a layer of water beneath the tyre. In half‐worn tyres or in bald tyres grooves are worn out making it difficult for water to flow out from under the tyre. Hydroplaning causes the vehicle to slide through the water on the surface of the road. When this happens the driver might lose control over the vehicle.
4. Tyre wear and under‐inflation
Worn out tyres lose air pressure faster making them under‐inflated. Underinflation further wears down the tyres and thus a vicious cycle ensues. Half‐worn or bald tyres when under‐inflated can cause serious problems to the motorists. With a lower tyre pressure also comes lesser fuel economy. You are likely to experience difficulty in steering. There is also a bigger chance of ending up with a busted tyre.
5. Bald tyres put you at the risk of a tyre burst
Without treads, there is a risk of tyres suddenly blowing out while driving. In a bald tyre, the rubber is more in contact with the asphalt. This would cause the tyres to accumulate more heat and burst. You become more vulnerable if you are driving briskly. Debris from the road can damage a bald tyre more than a new tyre causing the tyre to rupture.
6. Takes longer to brake in the rain
On wet roads, worn‐out tyres take significantly longer to come to a stop once the brake is applied. This was observed even in cars with an anti‐lock braking system (ABS). Taking longer and farther to halt after hitting the brake can even result in a vehicle collision.
